Despair! Death! Destruction! No, this isn’t a Sandman crossover—it’s a short list of the things we have to look forward to when Foundation returns for its apparently extremely dramatic second season. Said season takes place more than 100 years after the first, but all the characters are still around and the same age, which raises zero questions where the clone emperors are concerned, but is very confusing as it pertains to the rest of the cast.
But the first rule of Foundation might as well be “Don’t ask questions,” including any questions about how closely (or not) this hews to the Isaac Asimov stories on which it is based. Just enjoy Lee Pace’s outfits and go with the flow.
Here’s the synopsis:
More than a century after the season one finale, tension mounts throughout the galaxy in Foundation season two. As the Cleons unravel, a vengeful queen plots to destroy Empire from within. Hari, Gaal and Salvor discover a colony of Mentalics with psionic abilities that threaten to alter psychohistory itself. The Foundation has entered its religious phase, promulgating the Church of Seldon throughout the Outer Reach and inciting the Second Crisis: war with Empire. The monumental adaptation of Foundation chronicles the stories of four crucial individuals transcending space and time as they overcome deadly crises, shifting loyalties and complicated relationships that will ultimately determine the fate of humanity.
Team vengeful queen, right?
Along with Pace (as Brother Day, the most visible and shouty of the emperor clones), Foundation stars Jared Harris, Lou Llobell, and Leah Harvey. Returning cast also includes Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann, and this season introduces a whole new pile of actors as well: Ben Daniels (playing Bel Riose), Kulvinder Ghir (Poly Verisof), Rachel House (Tellem Bond), Nimrat Kaur (Yanna Seldon), Isabella Laughland (Brother Constant), Dimitri Leonidas (Hober Mallow), Holt McCallany (Warden Jaegger Fount), and Ella-Rae Smith (Queen Sareth of Cloud Dominion).
The Dark Knight writer David S. Goyer is co-creator and showrunner of Foundation, which returns to Apple TV+ on July 14th.
